About PDF QR Codes

A PDF QR code stores the URL of a PDF file that lives on the web. When someone scans it, their phone opens or downloads the PDF depending on the browser and the host. Because the link is stored directly in the code, the pattern itself never needs to be edited. As long as the PDF stays online at the same address, the code will keep working.

Solancr does not host files. Before generating a code, the PDF must already be available at a public URL. Common options include:

  • Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, or any other object storage.

Whichever host you use, open the link in a private browser window first to confirm it works without a login. If the link requires a sign-in, scanners will not be able to open it either.

Tips for Reliable PDF Codes

  • Use a direct link to the PDF file, not a link to a preview page. Some hosts show a preview wrapper that adds an extra click.
  • Keep the URL short where possible. Short URLs create simpler QR patterns that scan faster.
  • If the PDF is large, mention the file size near the code so the user knows what to expect.
  • Test the code with both Android and iOS before printing.
